EHN SPOTLIGHT: Amber Paris Montalvo, Digital Marketing Intern
With a passion for storytelling and for creating meaningful connections, we knew immediately that Amber Paris would be an incredible fit with the EHN family. A New York City native, Amber Paris is our first ever Digital Marketing Intern, and has already brought an abundance of creative ideas and energy to the team. We're thrilled to have her on board and to feature her this month in EHN's team spotlight!
Where are you from and in which countries have you lived?
I am from New York City! I’ve lived in almost every borough of the city, but I connect most to Brooklyn and Washington Heights. You will rarely meet a New Yorker who claims more than one borough. I also lived in Pisa, Italy for six months before moving to Amsterdam.
When and why did you move to the Netherlands?
April 22nd, 2021 was my two month mark living in Amsterdam, but it feels much longer! I decided to move to Amsterdam so I could create a meaningful life. When I visited the city in 2019, it was my first time outside the U.S., yet I felt more at home than ever. I am also earning my master’s degree at the University of Amsterdam in communications research.
Which languages do you speak?
Sarcasm and optimism :)
Before EHN, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
When I was 17 (haha, only 6 years ago!) I worked at the Brooklyn Museum of Art as a youth educator, where I designed curriculums based on popular themes in the museum’s collection. One of the themes was home and we encouraged students to think of intangible definitions of home. This was a turning point in my career where I truly saw myself as an educator and an artist. From there I continued to find ways to combine these passions.
In short, what is it that you do at Expat Housing Network?
I initiate creative ways EHN can engage, share, and connect with the international community in the Netherlands. This includes designing useful communications and resources that help expats find and feel at home. Currently, I am spearheading EHN’s upcoming YouTube series, “Home Away from Home” so stay tuned!
How would you describe Expat Housing Network in 3 words?
Purpose-driven, vibrant, and inspiring!
What drew you to Expat Housing Network?
The emphasis on helping people feel at home! This is such an important feeling that everyone deserves to experience, but not everyone does. Someone can find a beautiful property and still feel uncomfortable in it. EHN’s focus on the feeling spoke to me, and I knew I wanted to work on a team who truly understands people’s needs and has compassion for others. Being experts in real estate is one thing, but it’s not the only thing.
What’s one of your favourite things about your job?
My favorite thing about my job is that I get to speak with other expats in the Netherlands and learn about their journey. Storytelling is a beautiful and powerful tool and hearing how other people make sense of the concept of home is inspiring. And then I get to piece this story together for others to hear. It’s an absolute honor. Plus, I have a pretty cool team who supports each other.
What does “feeling at home” mean to you?
Feeling at home means to feel secure and safe. To feel safe enough to let your guard down, quiet the noise, and tap within. I believe that you can create this feeling anywhere in the world.
